A new use for old bicycles

My good friend Jake Wilson Craw (incidentally the most stylish man in Newcastle, as well as the most handsome), is selling wonderful accessories made from old bicycle tyres and inner tubes. I bought one from him yesterday, so taken was I by the amazing craftsmanship involved, and how practical and strong they are.

He’s also making bags, wallets, and who knows what else – shotgun cartridge belts? I watched him making something like that at Made in Newcastle today. It looks incredibly difficult getting the thick thread that holds these babies together through the dense rubber of the tyre. He seems to have pretty leathery hands though.

A belt like the one I bought would probably not work with a pair of slacks or suit trousers, but let’s face it, suit trousers should be held in place by braces. Belts are for jeans, and it’s through the loops of my jeans that the belt now embraces my sizeable waist.

If you’re interested in seeing more of Jake’s work, he sells through Made in Newcastle, through Folksy and Etsy.
